How to vet a Chinese OEM for wellness devices

Heated massagers, NIR therapy devices and wearable heat products live on the boundary between electronics and personal care. That is exactly where sourcing mistakes are expensive. This checklist is what we walk our own buyers through before the first purchase order.

Key Facts

The 7-step checklist

1 · Verify the factory is real

Request a scheduled live video walk-through. Check that the business licence name matches the name on your proforma invoice, and ask for a recent third-party audit (SGS, TÜV, BSCI). A real manufacturer shows lines without rehearsal time.

2 · Read certificates by scope, not by logo

Certificates are issued per model and per market. Ask which certificate covers the exact SKU you are buying, who the certificate holder is, and whether it is still valid. A certificate held by a sister company does not cover your product.

3 · Test samples the way customers will use them

For heated products: measure heat-up time, surface temperature uniformity across the pad, and stability over a full battery cycle. For air-pressure massagers: run the pump for its full rated cycle and check noise. Keep one sample as the reference for incoming QC.

4 · Pin down capacity with a plant name

"We can do 10,000 a month" means little. Ask which plant, how many lines, and what the daily output of that plant is. Honest suppliers state scope: for example, LightBDB's 5,000+ pcs/day figure refers to the Yangon plant only.

5 · Confirm MOQ, sampling and tooling

MOQ from 500 pcs per model is typical for this category. Clarify whether tooling or moulds are needed, who owns them, and how sample fees are handled on a first order.

6 · Agree Incoterms and payment

Default is usually FOB Shenzhen. Confirm the Incoterm, the port, freight method and payment structure (commonly T/T 30/70) before the proforma invoice is issued.

7 · Set the QC gate before production

Agree the AQL level, who pays for pre-shipment inspection, and what happens on failure. Put it in the contract, not in a chat message.

Five mistakes we see most often

Buying on unit price alone

The cheapest quote usually means thinner heating film, unrated batteries or no certification budget. The cost shows up later as returns, not as savings.

Assuming certificates transfer between models

They don't. A CE certificate for one eye massager does not cover a different PCB or a different heating element.

Skipping the battery question

Rechargeable heat products need UN38.3 and MSDS for shipping, plus a battery that holds capacity over hundreds of cycles. Ask for the cell supplier's spec.

No golden sample

Without a sealed reference sample you cannot resolve a quality dispute. Keep one signed sample from the approved batch.

Planning only for the first order

Ask how the supplier handles a second run 12 months later: is the mould still available, is the heating film still sourced from the same vendor, is the firmware version archived?
